Men Hair Transplant - Causes of Hair Loss

Despite all the different causes of hair loss like stress, vitamin deficiency medication and several diseases, the leading cause is one that we can’t do much about. Male pattern baldness, medically known as androgenetic alopecia, reflected by hair thinning in an “M-shaped" pattern. The hair follicles change and shrink, leading to thinning hair. While many treatments are available, they aren’t guaranteed to work and are not permanent solutions for hair loss. In the end, we’re all victims of our genes and that’s something that will never change.

Hair Transplantation

Hair transplantation has been introduced as an aesthetical surgery for hair restoration in the 1980s with the FUT technique which is done through the dissection of a strip of the skin from the donor area from the back of the head, some disadvantages however are that FUT technique requires a wide incision at the back of the head which is visible if the hair is cut short and which requires a long period for healing and discomfort, another disadvantage is that the procedure takes a longer time and causes a risk of the death of the grafts. In 2002 FUE technique (Follicular unit extraction) was introduced in the United States and gained further in 2005 it has proven itself to be useful when strip harvesting is replaced by unit extracting of the grafts one by one through a micro motor without leaving any scar at the back of the head.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a method of extracting, or “harvesting,” donor hair in a follicular unit hair transplant procedure. In FUE hair transplant surgery, an instrument (micro motor) with 0.6 mm dimension is used to make a small, circular incision in the skin around a follicular unit, separating it from the surrounding tissue. The unit is then extracted directly from the scalp, leaving a tiny open hole. This process is repeated until the hair transplant surgeon has harvested enough follicular units for the planned hair restoration. This process takes between 5 to 8 hours and can be made through 2 sessions in large balding areas. The donor wounds, completely heal over the course of seven to ten days, leaving tiny white scars buried in the hair in the back and sides of the scalp.

Hair Implantation (3D percutaneous technique)

After the grafts are harvested, tiny “recipient sites” are made in the balding area of the scalp using a fine needle-point instrument. The follicular units are then placed into the recipient sites where they will grow into hair-producing follicles. During this procedure our surgeons use the latest technique which is the percutaneous technique where access to the scalp tissue is done via needle puncture of the skin, rather than by using an "open" approach where inner tissues are exposed typically with the use of a scalpel known as the slit technique. The advantage of the percutaneous technique is that the recipient sites are made in 3 dimensions (circular) in a size of 0.5 mm which is equal to the size of the graft. Thanks to this technique the angle and orientation of the transplanted grafts is controlled by the surgeon to be within the natural direction of the hair since the implanted graft does not change position after implant, in addition and most importantly is that since the sites are very tiny a bigger number of grafts can be implanted comparing to the Slit technique, more specifically using this technique allows the surgeon to implant up to 55 grafts per cm squared as the Slit technique can only allow the surgeon to implant 35 grafts. The result of the percutaneous technique is high density hair with a natural look and a natural hair direction.

PRP Treatment

PRP (Platelet Rich plasma) is a blood plasma that contains a much elevated concentration in platelet which is normally produced in the blood. The plasma rich in thrombocytes, comes from the patient’s own body and is responsible for the reconstruction and the nutrition of the cells in the root of the hair. These plasmas are mixed with an activator (mix of special vitamins originally made in Switzerland) and then injected unto the scalp to revitalize and maintain the quality and the life of the hair follicles. This treatment helps the existing hair to survive longer and helps the hair implants to grow faster and healthier. This treatment is highly recommended with the hair transplant procedure but is not crucial to the success of the hair transplant.

HAIR TRANSPLANTATION STEP BY STEP

Pre- Transplant

  • A blood test is made to the patient to check up on his general health situation before getting operated.
  • A consultation and medical examination is performed by the supervising surgeon to confirm that the patient is a candidate for the operation and to specify the number of grafts to be implanted and the number of sessions required.
  • The planning of the transplant is planned by the surgeon, during this step the frontal hairline and the area to be implanted is drawn. The surgeon proceeds when the patient is satisfied with all the plan
  • The hair is completely shaved before the procedure, this will allow a maximal harvest and implant of the grafts.

During Transplant

  • A local anesthesia is applied on the area of harvest and the area to be implanted. The procedure lasts between 5 to 8 hours depending on implant number.
  • The number of grafts is extracted from the donor area in the first part of the surgery. The extracted grafts are then preserved in cold recipients to preserve their life before getting implanted.
  • The second stage of the hair transplant is the opening of the recipient sites which is done through the percutaneous technique.
  • The last stage is the implant of the grafts where all the harvested grafts are positioned on the recipient sites to grow there later on.

After Transplant

  • The next day of the transplant all bandages are taken out and all the operated area is cleaned.
  • The necessary instructions are given to the patient by written documents and detail explained by the surgeon. Along with the instructions the lifetime warranty is also handed to the patient.
  • In order to make sure that the patient achieves the needed results from the hair transplant our medical consultants follow up with the patient until completing the one year period of the completion of the result.
